What a wonderful year it is turning out to be for Malayalam, with another cute little gem hitting the screens before the year ends. Debutant director Mathukutty Xavier’s Helen is a terrific survival drama peppered with genuine emotions.
Helen (Anna Ben) is a nurse, who wants to find a job in Canada. She attends IELTS coaching classes and then works in a restaurant named Chicken Hub, inside a plush mall.
She lives with her father, an insurance agent Paul (Lal). He doesn’t like her daughter going abroad as he is really close to her. She is in love with a boy Azhar (Noble Babu Thomas), who is in the search for a job.
There is an incident involving a moody sub inspector Ratheesh Kumar (Aju Varghese) and the issues that lead to soon after, which adds to the pace of the narrative.
If you have watched the trailer and the posters, it is evident that Helen gets trapped somewhere and the rest of the story gets the viewer along with the nail biting moments that follow.
With good writing, beautiful frames and excellent music, the director has packaged this story in an impressive manner. As the tension mounts in the story, you can feel your heart beating faster and you start feeling for those involved.
In another display of brilliance, Anna Ben continues with the fine form that she was in her debut movie, Kumbalangi Nights. She is cute and bubbly initially and later when the situation demands the actor unleashes a matured performance.
Lal is quite good as Helen’s dad. Watch out for a brilliant show from Aju Varghese, who is doing a character that has a different shade from usual. The rest of the cast is really good.
Helen is the kind of movie that start affecting you slowly and shakes up totally by the time the end titles start rolling. Go for it!
